Barn Hollow Nature Preserve

Night Hiking

During one of our visits we arrived about 30 minutes before sunset.  I was anxious to get some pictures of the rocks and scenary.

Many of the photos were too dark to be of much good.  The natural rock overhangs that were more visible during the day now hide unknown entities.

I had the GPS with me and was attempting to follow and ancient map showing what is known as the "Improved Dirt Road".  The tree trunks were 2-3 inches in diameter so it's been some time since it was "improved".

If you were a kid with time to explore the region there would be all kinds of fun geology to explore.

At one point the trail opened up closer to the bottom.

I had been hiking only 10-15 minuntes before realizing it was going to get dark very quickly.  I was unable to determine where this road I was following had gone.

I was standing high up on the edge of the hill looking over into the next valley.  There are no neighbors, therefore no lights or other humans to be detected.

As it turns out, I'm VERY glad I had a GPS with me.  I became quite surprised to find out how easy it is to get lost in the woods at night!  When the sun went down I lost my perspective in the woods.  It's so dark, there are miles between you and the nearest house with nothing but National Forest between you.  This is a feeling that's uncommon to experience in today's world.
